Handling DEI from a Christian Perspective: Standing Firm in Faith

In today’s world, the terms Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) have become a popular framework in workplaces, schools, and social environments. At its core, DEI aims to ensure that people from all backgrounds, regardless of race, gender, religion, or ability, are treated fairly and included. It emphasizes acceptance, opportunity, and equal treatment. But as Christians, how do we approach DEI in a way that remains faithful to God’s Word?

Recently, I faced this very question during a job interview. One of the questions asked was, “What do you think about DEI?” I paused, realizing this was a defining moment in how I would respond as a Christian. The world has embraced DEI in an attempt to ensure fairness, but we, as followers of Christ, have a much higher calling. I could either give the answer they wanted to hear to secure the job or stand firm in my faith, trusting God for the outcome.

I began by explaining that, as a Christian, I actually go farther than DEI. While DEI advocates for worldly inclusion and equality, my faith calls me to something deeper. Jesus teaches us to serve others selflessly, to love not just our neighbors, but even our enemies (Matthew 5:44). We are called to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” and “love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). This command surpasses any human philosophy of equity or inclusion. It’s not about surface-level acceptance, but about sacrificial love rooted in God’s love for us.

When I shared this, there was a long pause on the other end of the line. The interviewer sounded shocked, but she also expressed her appreciation for what I had to say. I thought about it later—if someone truly believes in inclusion, they should be open to hearing my Christian beliefs, right?

After the conversation ended, I prayed, asking God to let His will be done. I chose not to let the conversation weigh me down because I put my trust in the Lord. Surprisingly, I was invited back for a second interview! This experience made me realize that God is calling Christians to step up in their faith, even in unexpected situations like job interviews.

A Christian Response to DEI

Our approach to DEI must always be grounded in Scripture. The Bible teaches us that every person is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), and because of that, every life has intrinsic value. Yet, it doesn’t stop there. Our calling is not just to recognize diversity and inclusion but to reflect God’s love in how we treat others. When asked how I handle difficult situations, such as upset clients, I often respond with Proverbs 15:1: “A soft answer turns away wrath.” It is through these biblical principles that I navigate challenges, showing kindness, patience, and humility.

We live in a time when the world is searching for answers. DEI, while noble in intent, is a human attempt to solve a spiritual problem. Only through Christ can true reconciliation and unity be found. Ephesians 2:14 reminds us that Jesus “is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in His flesh the dividing wall of hostility.” Christ is the answer to division, whether racial, social, or cultural.

Trusting God in All Circumstances

As Christians, we’re called to stand firm in our faith, even when it may cost us opportunities or social acceptance. In this moment of pressure, I had to trust God rather than compromise my beliefs to secure a job. Jesus said in Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” God calls us to prioritize Him in all areas of our lives, including our careers.

In today’s world, we are often put in situations where we must choose between what the world wants and what God desires. As Christians, we must boldly proclaim our faith, not in an offensive or combative way, but with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15). The Lord has given me the courage to share my faith in various situations, and He continues to provide opportunities to witness to others—even in job interviews.

A Call to Boldness for Christians

I encourage my fellow believers to stand up for their faith, especially in the face of worldly ideologies. The world needs the gospel more than ever, and we must not shrink back from sharing the hope we have in Christ. When the world asks for diversity and inclusion, we offer something greater—the gospel of Jesus Christ, which includes the ultimate invitation for all people to be reconciled to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to trust God in every situation. He is sovereign over your career, your future, and your opportunities. Even when the world’s expectations seem to conflict with your faith, remember that your identity is in Christ, not in worldly systems. Be bold, speak truth in love, and trust that God will open doors in ways you never expected.

After all, isn’t the ultimate form of inclusion found in God’s invitation to all people to receive salvation through Jesus Christ? That’s the message the world truly needs to hear.

Conclusion

As Christians, we don’t simply adopt the world’s ideas of inclusion. We go beyond that. We follow Christ’s example of radical love, serving others, and sharing the good news that transcends human efforts of equity. In a world that is increasingly hostile to biblical values, we must remember Jesus’ words: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

May we be bold and faithful witnesses in every area of our lives, trusting in God’s provision and guidance as we navigate these conversations with grace and truth.

Note: God’s Word is rich and full of depth—I could write exhaustive pages on each topic. However, as this is a blog, my goal is to encourage and inform, providing a starting point for your own studies. While I can offer explanations and guidance, true understanding comes through God the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10-12). Remember to please pray and ask God for wisdom and understanding, as recorded in James 1:5. If this blog has helped you in any way, be an encouragement by leaving a comment.
