Trusting God’s Will: What Scripture Reveals and What He Orchestrates

Many of us wrestle with understanding God’s will. We ask questions like, What does God want me to do? Why is this happening? Is this part of His plan? The Bible gives us clarity by showing that God’s will has two main parts: what He tells us in His Word and what He brings to pass in His perfect plan (Deuteronomy 29:29; Romans 12:2). These two aspects work together and help us know how to live and how to trust Him.

Part of the reason we struggle with God’s will is because we can only see the present, while God sees the whole picture, from beginning to end (Isaiah 46:10). We often want quick answers or signs from God to help us make decisions. But the Bible doesn’t promise to reveal everything. Instead, it tells us that God is always in control (Proverbs 16:9), always good (Psalm 119:68), and always trustworthy (Proverbs 3:5–6). Even when we don’t understand His plan (Ecclesiastes 3:11), we can still obey what He has clearly shown us in Scripture (Psalm 19:7–8; 2 Timothy 3:16–17). When we understand the difference between what God tells us to do and what He is doing behind the scenes, we can stop worrying and start living with peace and purpose (Romans 8:28; Matthew 6:33–34).

God’s Revealed Will: A Clear Call to Obey

God has kindly shown us how He wants us to live. We can find this in the Bible. This is often called His moral will, not just rules about right and wrong, but His instructions for how we are to live in a way that pleases Him.

Deuteronomy 29:29 helps us understand this:

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever.”

This means that while some things are hidden, God has clearly shown us what we need to know. He’s not silent. For example, 1 Thessalonians 4:3 says:

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification.”

And Romans 12:2 says:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

God’s revealed will is not confusing or vague. It’s clear and practical. It shows us how to become more like Christ. This is both a gift and a responsibility. We don’t have to guess how to live, we just need to follow what God has already told us in His Word.

God’s Sovereign Will: His Good Plan Over Everything

God’s sovereign will is different. It’s His full, perfect plan for everything that happens in the world. Nothing is outside of His control, not history, not nations, not even small or hard moments in our lives.

Ephesians 1:11 says:

“Also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things according to the counsel of His will.”

Even what seems random is not. Acts 17:26 reminds us:

“From one man He made every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation.”

We don’t always understand God’s sovereign will. It’s often hidden. But it’s never wrong, never harsh, and never without purpose. It comes from a God who is wise, loving, and always good. This plan includes joy and pain, victories and trials. The same will of God that led Jesus to the cross is the will that rules over our lives today.

Two Wills, One Purpose

Even though we talk about two parts of God’s will, what He tells us and what He plans, they are never in conflict. God’s commands show what pleases Him. His plan brings about what glorifies Him. We can’t always see how the two connect, but we can trust that they do.

Think of Jesus in the garden before His crucifixion. He prayed in Matthew 26:42:

“My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done.”

Jesus followed God’s revealed plan for salvation and trusted in God’s sovereign plan, even when it meant suffering. What looked like defeat was actually victory, because it fulfilled God’s perfect will.

Trust and Obey

We’re not called to figure out every detail of God’s hidden plan. We’re called to trust Him. We’re called to obey what He has revealed in His Word. He tells us to live in humility, in faith, and in love. He’s shown us His heart in Jesus. And He continues to work all things for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

In a world full of unknowns, we can hold on to this: God’s will is not divided. It all works toward His glory and our good.

So let’s walk in what we do know, and trust Him with what we don’t.

“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us…”
Deuteronomy 29:29

Note: God’s Word is rich and full of depth—I could write exhaustive pages on each topic. However, as this is a blog, my goal is to encourage and inform, providing a starting point for your own studies. While I can offer explanations and guidance, true understanding comes through God the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10-12). Remember to please pray and ask God for wisdom and understanding, as recorded in James 1:5. If this blog has helped you in any way, be an encouragement by leaving a comment.
